In Year 5, we have been promoting a love of reading. We have started reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone during our guided reading lessons and we are eagerly awaiting to discover what adventures Harry will go on during his time at Hogwarts. During guided reading, we have been working with a partner to share chapters of the story and discuss the events of the text, our favourite characters and unpick new vocabulary.
We were also very fortunate to participate in an author workshop with Tola Okogwu, where she spoke about how she became a published author and she also read us a chapter from her book, Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun. During the workshop, we also discovered that Tola Okogwu has also written a book that will be published especially for World Book Day and we were all keen to obtain a copy when we receive our £1 book tokens next year!
Finally, during the month of September, we were set the challenge of redesigning our reading areas in order to transform them into mini libraries and to create an enjoyable space to delve into a good book. We have also used one of our British Values – democracy – to vote for the book we are reading during our 3 o’clock read, with 5H choosing The Day I Was Erased by Lisa Thompson and 5E choosing The Night Bus Hero by Onjai K. Rauf.
Finally, consider these Book Match suggestions recommended by The Reader Teacher, 2023, if you are enjoying reading Harry Potter:
Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun by Tola Okogwu
Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend
The Nowhere Emporium by Ross MacKenzie
The Storm Keeper’s Island by Catherine Doyle
