Year 5 Black History Month

Black History Month always provides fantastic opportunities to celebrate key historical figures, but also explore the work of more contemporary individuals who encapsulate the diverse and multi-cultural world we are fortunate to call home. For Year 5, this has coincided with a delve into the poetic realm of Benjamin Zephaniah, who sadly passed away within these last 12 months.

Students explored and discussed a variety of Zephaniah's works within reading sessions, including Luv Song, Beat it and According to my Mood, while author craft time has been dedicated to analysing and replicating their own version of the poem, The British. Children utilised skills including imperative verbs, adverbs and expanded noun phrases to thread together their own chosen historical ingredients, nationalities and British novelties and construct a 'recipe' for what makes 'The British' people.
