Year 5 Maths Update

During the opening weeks of the term, Year 5 have been covering the most fundamental of mathematical areas, exploring the principles of place value in varying guises up to 1,000,000. Within this unit, pupils consolidated prior learning centred around skills such as rounding, the use of number lines and the representation of numbers using pictorials, including place value charts. Having a secure understanding in the knowledge of place value is imperative for setting good foundations in numeracy before moving on to more specific disciplines.

More recently, attention has turned to the use of key operations: addition and subtraction. Pupils have applied their reinforced place value knowledge and worked through the formal written methods of using column addition and subtraction, but also how to deploy mental strategies to effectively add and subtract without needing formal representation. This area of maths will continue into next half-term, prior to traversing over to the domains of perimeter and area.
