Here at Oak Meadow, our PSHE curriculum supports and underpins the development of physically, emotionally, and socially healthy young people, equipped to live healthy, safe, productive, and responsible lives. We provide the knowledge needed to help pupils keep themselves and others safe, teaching the correct language, skills, and strategies. The curriculum supports the development of essential life skills for the 21st century, encouraging positive career choices and good behaviour. It aims to reduce or remove barriers to learning, such as bullying, low self-esteem, and unhealthy or risky behaviours. We view Personal, Social, and Health Education (PSHE) as a critical and necessary part of every pupil’s education, and this is embedded within our whole-school approach.

We impart accurate, balanced, and relevant knowledge, alongside opportunities for students to turn that knowledge into personal understanding. Our curriculum provides opportunities to explore, clarify, and, when necessary, challenge their own and others’ values, attitudes, beliefs, rights, and responsibilities.

Through our child-centred PSHE curriculum, we give our pupils the knowledge, understanding, and skills they need to flourish in modern Britain and take on responsibilities both within our school and the wider community.

We follow a spiral curriculum, allowing pupils to build upon and extend their knowledge year on year. There are three main themes across the year within which the following are taught:

  • Well-Being and Mental Health: Teaching children about their emotions, how to manage them, and how to support others. Activities may include mindfulness exercises, discussions about feelings, and coping mechanisms.

  • Relationships Education: Teaching children about healthy relationships, friendships, respect, empathy, and understanding diversity.

  • Physical Health and Well-Being: Teaching about the importance of physical activity, healthy eating, hygiene, and understanding the body.

  • Economic Education: Introducing age-appropriate concepts such as money, budgeting, saving, and the value of work.

  • Personal Safety: Lessons on personal safety, including understanding boundaries, online safety, and making safe choices in different situations.

We use a variety of teaching approaches to engage students effectively:

  • Interactive Lessons: Group discussions, role-play, and scenarios to engage students in real-life situations.

  • Stories and Case Studies: Stories can help convey key messages in a relatable way.

  • Hands-On Activities: Activities like creating health posters, completing surveys on well-being, and setting up class agreements for respectful behaviour.

  • Use of Visuals and Resources: Videos, images, and multimedia resources make the subject more engaging and understandable for young children.

Assessment in PSHE is ongoing and informal:

  • Ongoing Assessment: Teachers assess students through informal methods such as observing group work, asking reflective questions, or holding class discussions.

  • Feedback from Students: Students reflect on what they’ve learned and how they can apply it to their lives, helping them internalise important lessons.

  • Celebration of Learning: We celebrate milestones or achievements, such as completing a well-being project or learning about safety, with certificates or special recognition.
