Design & Technology at Oak Meadow Primary School

At Oak Meadow Primary School, our Design and Technology (DT) curriculum is designed with the intention of igniting creativity, problem-solving, and practical skills in our students. Through a carefully structured approach, we aim to inspire children to explore different materials, tools, and techniques. By offering engaging and hands-on projects, we ensure that students have the opportunity to design, make, and evaluate a range of products, which in turn fosters their ability to think critically, work collaboratively, and develop practical skills. We follow the National Curriculum guidelines, ensuring that our students develop proficiency in the core areas of mechanisms, textiles, food technology, and structures, with a focus on real-world applications and creativity.

The implementation of our DT curriculum is embedded in a series of carefully planned projects that align with the National Curriculum's expectations for Design and Technology. Each unit is designed to allow children to explore and experiment with different types of DT, including mechanisms, textiles, food technology, and structures. We focus on providing students with the opportunity to develop their skills through a progression of projects across the year. These projects involve designing and creating products such as moving picture books, automata toys, healthy wraps, toy fire engines, and electrical systems like light-up signs. The curriculum encourages hands-on learning, where students gain practical experience and are supported to problem-solve and evaluate their designs. By engaging with a variety of materials and techniques, our students are empowered to work independently and creatively while understanding how design and technology shape the world around them.

The impact of our DT curriculum is evident in the development of our students' creative, technical, and practical skills. Through engaging projects, students learn to design and create products that are both functional and innovative, which boosts their confidence and fosters a sense of achievement. The progression of skills throughout the year ensures that students become more proficient in their use of materials, tools, and techniques. By the end of their primary education, students will have gained a solid understanding of the principles of mechanisms, textiles, food technology, and structures, and will be able to apply this knowledge in real-life scenarios. Our DT curriculum equips students with the skills and knowledge to think critically, solve problems, and express their creativity, preparing them for future learning and challenges in the world of design and technology.
