PE at Oak Meadow

At Oak Meadow, we are committed to providing a high-quality PE curriculum that encourages every child to develop their physical abilities, confidence, and a love for movement. We believe that physical education is essential for promoting both physical and mental well-being, and we strive to create an environment where children feel supported, challenged, and inspired to engage in a variety of physical activities. Our curriculum follows the guidelines of the Primary National Curriculum, ensuring that all students are exposed to a range of sports and skills that will help them lead healthy, active lives. We use the Get Set 4 PE scheme of learning throughout the school, which provides a comprehensive, progressive framework for teaching a broad range of physical skills and activities. This scheme helps us to deliver engaging, structured lessons that support the development of key physical competencies and encourage all students to reach their full potential.

Our PE curriculum includes a wide range of activities designed to develop fundamental skills such as coordination, balance, and teamwork. These include ball skills, where children develop their ability to pass, dribble, and shoot in games like girls' football; gymnastics, which focuses on building balance and control through movement; and target games, such as bowling, where children refine their precision and focus. We aim to create an inclusive environment where all children, regardless of ability, can participate and experience success.

In addition to these core areas, we offer extracurricular activities to further extend students' opportunities to develop their skills outside the classroom. Clubs such as cross-country, rounders, and cricket allow children to apply what they’ve learned in lessons, while fostering a sense of teamwork and school pride. These extra-curricular activities also provide opportunities for students to represent the school in local competitions and tournaments, offering them a chance to build confidence and experience the joy of sport.

Our PE curriculum ensures that each lesson is designed to challenge students and build on previous learning. Fundamental skills such as running, jumping, and throwing are introduced early and built upon in activities like athletics and rounders, where students learn techniques for both individual performance and teamwork. In invasion games like football and netball, children focus on strategies for attacking and defending, while in net and wall games like tennis, they develop hand-eye coordination and teamwork. Through these activities, we prioritise the development of physical literacy, which helps students understand the importance of moving with confidence, competence, and creativity. These essential skills lay the foundation for being active and fit throughout life.

The curriculum also emphasises the importance of team-building activities, encouraging children to collaborate, communicate, and problem-solve together. These skills are reinforced through various games and challenges that require teamwork, trust, and leadership. For example, in team sports like football or rounders, children learn to support one another and work towards a common goal.

By the end of their primary education, students at Oak Meadow will have developed a broad range of physical skills and a positive attitude towards physical activity. Our PE curriculum not only improves children’s physical abilities but also promotes emotional resilience, self-confidence, and teamwork. Through a combination of structured lessons and extra-curricular opportunities, children will have the chance to refine their skills and participate in competitive events, where they learn to handle success and setbacks with grace.

Ultimately, we aim to inspire a lifelong love of physical activity in every child. Whether they pursue individual sports, such as athletics or cross-country, or team sports, like football or rounders, our PE program equips them with the skills, confidence, and enthusiasm to stay active and healthy throughout their lives. Through our commitment to a well-rounded PE curriculum, we ensure that every student leaves Oak Meadow with the foundation to continue enjoying physical activity well beyond their school years.
